"Essential Liszt"
- the much-anticipated new EMI/Warner Classics album (worldwide release July 2011)
The twelve year old Greek pianist Dimitris SGOUROS' American recital in 1982 was nothing short of phenomenal. Born in Athens, he began his piano studies at age seven, at nine he entered the Conservatory of Athens and received his teaching diploma at the age of twelve.
His musical memory is in a class with Mozart or Mendelssohn, capable of reading a complicated score like a Beethoven sonata only twice to have it committed to memory. His Newport debut included two of the most difficult pieces in the literature, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit and Balakirev's
Islamey, and left the audience gasping. For an encore he played the hauntingly beautiful Traumerei by Schumann. The success of this recital led to Sgouros being immediately re-invited to Newport for the following season.
Dimitris Sgouros awarded a
Diploma from Poland's Minister of Culture and National Heritage "for
outstanding contribution to the legacy" of Chopin
"I downloaded
Sgouros's performance of Chopin Ballade No 1
in a live appearance... it is by far the greatest of all I have ever
heard....it is flawless and when he gets to the presto section, he gives me
the chills - it is even better than Richter's own live performance, in my
opinion..."
- Dr Gradus
